Yeah, yeah, I know I didn’t post the next day like I promised, but I had to set up a computer center and try to get situated to work remotely. That took most of the day. Anyway, it’s now Saturday, July 12, for at least 10 more minutes.

The drive from Elko was surprisingly smooth. Heading north out of Elko was a bit hairy — the first half-hour or so of driving was through VERY curvy mountain roads. Then it straightened out for a couple of hours until we hit Boise. No major problems with the radio. We were too busy trying to handle the road conditions to worry about intermittent radio signals. Stopped for gas somewhere outside Boise (I think it was in the area of $4.15 to $4.20 there), and headed north and west. Crossed a good deal of northern Oregon and crossed over into Washington on either I-82 or I-84. Stopped for more gas just past Pasco. Last gas stop before we hit the metro Seattle area. A few more hairy stretches, crossing the 45th parallel (half-way to the North Pole), and then some smooth sailing heading down out of the mountains into the (relative) sea level environs of Puget Sound.

As I noted before, we hit the western edge of Bellevue just after rush hour started to get going. About an hour or so later, we reach the storage facility we had chosen for the moving truck to unload our furniture until we find a permanent home.

We get to Bill’s house and greet him and his mother, Esther. They are both great friends, and attended our wedding ceremony in Canada, more than four years ago. Bill made us honorary god-parents of his daughter, Alexis, and we have never been prouder of how she is turning out. She’s currently attending University in BC somewhere.

Most of the week, I’m working during the day, Jeffrey’s trying to coordinate the moving truck and arranging work, checking houses for sale on the internet, and trying to reconnect with some friends we had lost touch with over the last 8 years.

The big event was Friday, around Happy Hour time. We decided to go to the bar we used to hang out at so many years ago, and ran into most of the people we were friends with way back when. It was like coming home after a long trip. I have my mountains again, I have Jeffrey (the center of my life for almost 17 years now), I have a job I love that allows me to work remotely, and I have the reconnection with my family (about 2,500 miles closer now) and friends. I am very content,  more so than I have been for some time.

Our biggest obstacle right now is finding a permanent home, which Jeffrey is already working on. We’ve been checking out properties online, and visiting the neighborhoods when time permits.

The other big obstacle (for me, at least) is my physical condition. I don’t think I’ve mentioned it here, but the day after Memorial Day I was involved in an auto accident. I was stopped at a red light, and this 89-year old man rear-ended me at what felt like a high rate of speed. Apparently, he was trying to swerve to avoid me, but it wasn’t enough. He clipped my passenger-side back end and spun me about 90 degrees or so in the street. He continued on his path by jumping the curb, and going into the grass swale between the street and the parking lot of where I was stopped waiting for the light to change. It took over three weeks to get my car repaired (a brand new car with only 600+ miles on it).

The timing couldn’t have been worse for me, even though NO accident ever occurs at a good time. I got my car back, fully fixed, the Friday before we were to move to Seattle. The repair bill was over 1/3 of what the car cost. Fortunately, I’ve had no problems with it during the move, and it’s almost as quiet as it was when I bought it. You couldn’t tell the darn thing was even running unless you were looking at the engine or watching the tachometer.

Anyway, relating to the accident, I’m still having problems with my lower back and my left shoulder. I had an MRI on the shoulder, and it showed signs of trauma and possible nerve impingement, and my doctor prescribed physical therapy. Nothing about the lower back yet, though. Now that I’m here, I need to find a decent doctor and follow through on the therapy, and possibly have my back checked out. The marathon drive cross-country (3,721.5 miles, based on my trip odometer) did not help the situation. My normal driving position is with my left hand on the wheel and my left elbow resting on the door/window meeting place. And my back also hurt more with each passing day. The pain pills I was prescribed haven’t had much effect, and I don’t know how much longer I can deal with it.

I’ve also got to set up an invoicing system and a cost tracking system, since I am now a contractor and not a regular employee, and start tracking my income to report as a sole-propietorship and sending estimated quarterly taxes into the IRS. I’m already about half-way finished.

The moving van arrived this afternoon. The storage room was big enough, but only just. We pulled out a couple of things (Jeffrey’s suits and dress shirts, some food stuffs, etc.) for immediate future use.

That’s all for tonight. Next post I’ll try to be a little more informative about our living arrangements.

And remember — Reality has a Liberal bias.

P.S.  Gas prices here in the Seattle area are averaging $4.33 and higher for regular unleaded.  That shocks me, since there are a few refineries in the metro area.  I’m curious as to why our prices are higher that almost anything we’ve seen coming cross-country.
