Greetings from Fort Collins, Colorado.

Sorry for the short post yesterday, but we were both exhausted.  Today was an even longer day, but we’re holding up much better now.  In fact, we’ve made up enough time that we’re going to be back on schedule and arrive at my mother’s place in Elko tomorrow afternoon sometime.

So you may be wondering why I’m writing from Ft. Collins instead of Denver?  Denver, where I was born but haven’t been back to since I was three months old?  Denver, where, according to mom, I lived in the house next door to where the “Unsinkable Molly Brown” used to live?  Denver, where I have cousins I haven’t seen or heard from since my grandfather’s funeral back in the late 90s?

Easy.  Jeffrey’s mother remembered that his aunt and cousin are living in Ft. Collins now, and said cousin invited us to stay the night.  Aunt is Jeffrey’s father’s sister, and the families were very close when Jeffrey was growing up.  They’ve been spending the evening catching up and reminiscing.  We got to see a nice fireworks show from their backyard, and the dogs did NOT freak out, amazingly enough.  Now we’re unwinding and getting ready to go to bed.

I don’t quite know how we did it.  It must have something to do with higher speed limits, driving faster than those limits (without getting caught), and driving more hours a day than we originally planned for.  Oh, and gaining an hour every time we cross a time zone.  Today’s time zone change surprised me, though, by being thirty-odd miles before the Kansas-Colorado border.  I thought it would be the border itself.

We left Tulsa shortly after 6:30 this morning, CST.  Traffic was very light, needless to say, so there was no rush hour to deal with, no workers to watch out for, and not many cops patrolling yet.  Not a very exciting day drive-wise, but we were able to confirm a few things.  Either Jeffrey’s SUV has undersized tires or mine has oversized.  When my speedometer reads 70 or 75, his reads about 5 mph higher.  Also, I go about 1/2 a tank of gas for his 3/4 or full tank.

For those of you who’ve read my previous posts, the radio was pretty decent most of the way.  About an hour before the Kansas/Colorado border, I was down to three stations, two xtian preaching stations and a country-western station.  Maybe 1/2 hour after we crossed the border into Colorado, I didn’t even have that.  My radio kept cycling through both the FM and AM bands trying to find something strong enough to fix on for a good 20 or 30 minutes.  Jeffrey, meantime, was on his cellphone with his mother, his cousin or me trying to negotiate driving an extra hour beyond Denver to Fort Collins.  We would have gotten into Denver approx. 4:00, but this way we were able to take a toll road before we hit the city proper and get to Ft. Collins in less than 45 minutes.  That puts us an hour ahead of where we would have been starting tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow’s route is back to I-25 north to Cheyenne and I-80 and then due west until we hit Elko.  We’ll hit another time zone change at the Utah/Nevada border, picking up another hour.  I just hope we don’t have to deal with anymore road construction going on.  I’m beginning to think that every road in the country has some construction work going on.  Certainly every one we have travelled on since we left Ft. Lauderdale has.

Mom, Lori, I would ask a small favor of one of you.  The animals have been extraordinarily good on this gruelling trip, but seem to be a little off of their feed.  If you wouldn’t mind, please pick up a normal size can of dog food and a single serving size of cat food to treat them with.  We haven’t been near enough a grocery store to do that for them yet.  Either Jeffrey or I will give you call when we’re getting close to Elko for more precise directions to our destination, whichever you two have decided.
