Getting Political for a Moment

August 12th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I’ve tried not to bring any politics into this blog, aside from highly recommending my cyber-friend Steve Benen at The Carpetbagger Report.  Some people are social conservatives, and I will respect that.  That fact that they are willing to vote against their own self-interest because of that baffles me.  Gay marriage or abortion will not affect them in the least, unless they choose to have one.  A record deficit, recession, an illegal war, our loss of standing in the world, all of them will affect them directly or indirectly, but none of the latter issues mean anywhere near as much.  I married Jeffrey more than four years ago.  We’ve been together almost 17 years.  The world hasn’t ended; the sky hasn’t fallen; and civilization did not collapse.  Get over it already!

Today I ran across one more disturbing video about McCain, and I can’t remain silent anymore.

I’m only going to mention two items here. First is candidate McCain’s list of flip-flops. These are not just random issues he has changed his opinion on after getting more information. Some of these are things he has stood by for years and suddenly changed depending on the audience he’s talking to. In some cases, he has changed his stance several time a week, or several times an hour.  I think one of the most telling of these is his position on veterans.  He was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, for gawds’ sake.  He talks a lot about increasing veterans’ benefits, and the college benefit for new recruits, but he votes against them every time.

The next is his war stance.  There is a new group of Republican senators and representatives who have decided to endorse Obama, because (paraphrasing here) the thought of McCain in the White House scares them to death.  Someone put together a video about this, and “chilling” seems like a serious understatement.  A word about the site this is on.  Andrew Sullivan is a gay man.  He is also a conservative.  It sound’s like an oxymoron, I know, but after we got into Bush’s first term a bit, he seems to have come around.  THIS CLIP linked from his site should be enough to frighten anyone even considering McCain.

Think before you vote.

I’ll have another update of the new house in a bit.

“Gay marriage or abortion will not affect them in the least…”

Only if you ignore what happens when society debases institutions to mean whatever the hell you want them to mean, lest one gets called a “bigot”.

And only if you ignore that abortion takes a life. As a guy with no rights to the life that could be created, it takes incredible gall to say that it “will not affect”.

    “A record deficit…”

Only in monetary figures. It’s not a record deficit in terms of GDP.

    “…recession…”

There is no recession. You’re either lying on that point, or ignorant.

    “…an illegal war…”

I’m going to take a wild guess here and say that you’re lying.

“…our loss of standing in the world…”

    Among whom?

“I married Jeffrey more than four years ago. We’ve been together almost 17 years. The world hasn’t ended; the sky hasn’t fallen; and civilization did not collapse. Get over it already!”

Some people will never accept your definition of marriage. Get over it already!

Only if you ignore what happens when society debases institutions to mean

Then maybe you need to read up on the institution of marriage. For millenia, is has been a property arrangement. Marriage didn’t even become a sacrament in the xtian church until about 1,000 years ago. Hell, even the xtian church used to have a ceremony for same-sex unions. Women were considered chattel, or property if you will, until just over a century ago.

Your display of ignorance is astonishing.

And only if you ignore that abortion takes a life

Define a life. The US Supreme Court did that quite some time ago, whether you agree with it or not. If life ends at “brain death”, then life can only begin at “brain life”. A fetus is no more alive than a shark embryo in the female’s womb. It is not until there is brain activity, or until it takes it’s first breath, that is it considered “alive”.

    Only in monetary figures

I’m sorry, but how else is a defecit or recession defined, except by monetary figures? I think you need to stop taking whatever hallucinogens you are on.

    Among whom?

I thought I made that clear in my statement. Among the nations and continents of the world. Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, Australia. Antarctica isn’t owned by any one nation or continent, so I can’t count them.

    Who are you counting??

Gawds, you right-wing nuts would be a lot easier to deal with if you knew what you were talking about.
